If you’re a shorter man that likes to dress well, then you may already know about Ash & Erie. If not, then they definitely should be on your radar.
Time to put the Style Spotlight on Ash & Erie, a brand that deserves the attention, not only because they make quality essentials, but also because they’re tailor-made specifically for shorter men, something many brands choose to ignore.
I’ve been an avid supporter of the brand because they’re making it easy to dress well as a shorter man and that’s to be applauded.

Company Background
If you don’t know, Ash & Erie is a Detroit based menswear brand that caters to shorter men — specifically those 5’8″ and under. Their mission is to help shorter guys look & feel their best which is a mission that Gentleman Within has long been onboard with.
Ash & Erie made a big splash in 2017 when the co-founders made an appearance on the hit show Shark Tank, pitching to all the money hungry sharks. Billionaire Mark Cuban was so impressed that he offered $150,000 for a 25% stake in the company. Talk about deal of a lifetime.
Casual Button Down Shirts For Short Guys
Ash & Erie currently has a modest collection of men’s essentials, mainly consisting of the ubiquitous long sleeve button down shirt which is highlighted below.
I don’t know about you, but to this day I still struggle to find properly fitting shirts off-the-rack. Other brands’ shirt sleeves are simply too long and the shirt length makes me feel like I’m a kid playing dress up. Wearing them untucked is just not an option.
Ash & Erie button down shirts, however, are designed to be worn untucked. And as a guy that’s 5’6″ on a good day (3 inches under the average male height in America of 5’9″) that detail is crucial.
In this style spotlight, I’m going to showcase how I wore a couple of shirts from their fall collection, everyday collection, and summer collection.
Let’s start with the fall shirts.
Ash & Erie Fall Shirts Collection
Currently, the Ash & Erie fall collection consists of over a dozen seasonally appropriate long sleeve shirts in plaids and check patterns. Clearly, plaid flannel was readymade for fall.
These fall shirts come in varying fabric textures and thickness. They all feature a brushed cotton/flannel material which makes them really soft to the touch.
Did you know? Brushed cotton is a woven cotton fabric that’s been brushed to achieve the buttery soft texture that’s similar to cashmere.
Some of my favorites are the dark Graphite Check shirt, the Navy Falls Gingham shirt, and the Pecan Plaid shirt.
Long Sleeve Pecan Plaid Flannel Shirt
The Pecan Plaid button up shirt features a black and brown, plaid pattern that simply screams autumn. It’s one of the lighter weight flannels they carry. I paired the shirt with black slim jeans (also from Ash & Erie) and olive sneakers. It’s a casual fit that’s inspired by nature around us.
Brushed flannels with earthy tones are a perfect fall fashion statement. This outfit is both seasonally appropriate and flawlessly fitting. Throw on an additional layer with the light quilted vest and you’ll be fall-ready.
Long Sleeve Trailhead Plaid Flannel Shirt
The Trailhead Plaid button up shirt is highlighted by colors of nautical aqua and orange. This shirt is thick and heavier weight than the flannel shirt shown above, which will come in clutch especially as the weather begins to cool.
If you watch the NFL then I know what you’re thinking. No — I bleed green as diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan, thank you very much. #FlyEaglesFly.
I do, however like the colors here as it’s not what you’d typically expect from a flannel shirt. It’s cool and light, but has a strong contrast with the black lines. It plays particularly well with the black jeans here.
Again, I love how the collar is appropriately sized for my shorter frame along with the thinner sleeve cuffs. Also notice how the shirt falls at the perfect length. I’m falling in love with these flannels right about now.
Now let’s move onto Ash & Erie everyday shirts.
The Everyday Shirt Collection
The Ash & Erie Everyday shirt collection comes in neutral, solid colors and a classic blue gingham check. They’re all muted which makes them more versatile for everyday wear whether you’re at the office or happy hour.
Each shirt is designed with a button down collar which gives it a smart casual aesthetic. I like how the collar, sleeves, sleeve cuffs and arm holes are properly scaled to better fit short men.
Additionally the sleeve length and body length is on point. Wearing these shirts you won’t feel like you’re drowning in them which is often the case with many off-the-rack brands. You really can see the difference with Ash & Erie shirts compared with your typical mall brands.
Muted Green Long Sleeve Shirt
The muted green shirt is a lighter shade of green. It’s a lightweight cotton and has a texture that feels like linen or chambray.
The shirt is right at home paired with the slim, dark wash indigo jeans, also from Ash & Erie. The Everyday shirts look particularly great with jeans and sneakers.
Heather Blue Ink Long Sleeve Shirt
Blue is one of my favorite colors to wear and so the heather blue ink shirt was a must for my collection. It’s versatile and easy to wear. Whether you go with a buttoned or unbuttoned look, it’s a casual cool shirt that will always get the style points.
The fabric feels slightly softer than the muted green shirt with a smoother texture. It looks great here layered over top of a grey v-neck t-shirt, dark blue jeans and white, gumsole sneakers.
Finally, let’s take a quick look at Ash & Erie’s summer shirt.
Quick note: If you’re enjoying this article featuring Ash & Erie button down shirts, then you’ll probably like this feature of Ash & Erie knitwear too.
The Summer Shirt Collection
Ash & Erie’s summer shirt collection is still as versatile as the rest of their collections, but feature linen blends, fun printed patterns, and bolder colors which is perfect for warmer weather.
Some of my favorites include the Denim Blue Linen, Safari Green Linen, and Faded Sky Gingham.
Faded Sky Gingham Button Down Shirt
I’ve had the faded sky gingham shirt since last summer. It’s made with a lightweight cotton that’s soft and includes all of the classic Ash & Erie’s shirt details. Proportional collar, cuffs, sleeves and a proper length.
As its name suggest, the blue gingham check is faded and so it’s a subtle refinement that you can really appreciate when you take a closer look at the shirt. I threw on the J.Crew Factory Walker Vest as an additional layer for both style and function.
Where To Buy Ash & Erie Shirts
At this time they do not have a physical location, but you can order shirts online at ashanderie.com.

For more information about Ash & Erie and a closer look at their summer collections and essential jeans, take a look at my original Ash & Erie Review. You didn’t hear it from me, but word on the street is that they will be expanding their lineup pretty soon, so stayed tuned for that!
I finally would like to thank Ash & Erie again for supporting Gentleman Within. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without great sponsors like them.
Have you tried Ash & Erie, if so how’d it go?
