The Seiko 5 is often venerated among watch enthusiasts and collectors alike. It’s said to be the gateway into the world of mechanical watches. And while I don’t consider myself a watch guy, I’ve owned this watch for 6+ years now. In fact, this Seiko 5 was my first automatic watch.
It’s the SNK803 model which features a beige dial and cream canvas strap. I choose the SNK803 over the popular black, navy and olive options. I feel that the lighter dial makes it different and quite versatile which I showcase below.
So, let’s get to it. In no particular order, here are the 5 reasons why I love my Seiko 5. And if you want more details about this watch, check out the in-depth Seiko 5 review here.

REASON #1: VERSATILE
The Seiko 5 SNK803’s casual aesthetic and neutral beige color makes it immensely versatile and stylish. It goes well with lighter color palettes as well as darker color schemes. Navy, tan, olive, gray, white, black, the SNK803 plays nicely with a myriad of colors. And although I’ve never worn it with a suit, I have paired it with all kinds of casual outfits over the years. In fact the Seiko 5 along with my Timex Weekender became my casual outfit, go-to watches.
My summer style is quite minimal, but you’ll always find me with a watch on my wrist, usually with some sort of canvas or nato strap. The SNK803’s default beige strap is quite hideous when paired with the beige dial in my opinion, it just looks washed out and bland overall. But the magic is in the style swap. Swap it with a brown leather strap for a more classy aesthetic. Or you can throw a light olive, leather nato strap on it for some subtle contrast, keeping an earth tone vibe.
It even looks great with a navy strap, a black and gray striped strap or olive green strap, and it’s this versatility that I absolutely love about my Seiko 5.

REASON #2: FUNCTIONAL
Being an automatic watch, the Seiko 5 doesn’t need a battery. The watch gets its energy from your body’s movement which is what I feel makes mechanical watches like this special. To see the movement and feel the ticking on your wrist, it’s a quality that a quartz or digital watch can’t match. It’s as if the watch is a living, breathing organism.
Additionally, the lume is quite luminous, but not overly bright. And since the Seiko 5 is a military-inspired field watch, with a military heritage, it makes sense that it would have a lume that’s easily visible in the field, while not being distracting, like say a Timex Indiglo, for example.

REASON #3: HERITAGE
If I learned one thing about the watch community during my time on YouTube is that they love to hate on watches without any kind of heritage. New “affordable luxury” fashion watches are labeled despicable. If it’s not Swiss made or from a brand with a storied history selling watches then they will bash it into the ground. And I can sort of see where they’re coming from.
That being said, I like that the Seiko 5 plays a big role in Seiko’s history, and Seiko is world-renowned as a reputable watchmaker that crafts quality timepieces that are worn by young and old, rich and poor alike. It’s a point of pride when you can wear a timepiece that’s well respected and has a storied history well before you were born.

REASON #4: AFFORDABLE
Point blank, the Seiko 5 is super affordable for the quality you’re getting. Coming in at under $100, you can find the Seiko 5 anywhere from $50-$90 depending on the time of year you pick it up. If you’re on Amazon around Black Friday you’ll surely snag a great deal. The highly affordable price point makes the Seiko 5 the best bang for your buck watch on the market.

REASON #5: DURABLE
The watch can just straight up take a beating. I’ll take one from Timex and say that this watch has taken a lickin’ and keeps on ticking. I’ve had it for 6 years and it’s been through the ringer. I banged it on railings, dropped it, had it dipped in water and it’s still going strong. The scratches that it does have on the matte finish bezel just adds a bit of character to it I think.
1) Minimal Dial
I love the minimal nature of the dial. It comes in at 37mm, which is flattering for more modest wrists like mine.
2) Day-Date Complication
The Seiko 5 comes with a classic day-date complication that’s easy to read and doesn’t add any clutter, which is quite a feat.
3) Matte Finish Bezel
Something about the Seiko 5’s bead blasted, matte finish bezel is so aesthetically pleasing. And I prefer it over the shiny chrome appearance of the Timex Weekender.
4) First Love
As I mentioned in the beginning, the Seiko 5 was my very first automatic watch and you know what they say about firsts—they’re never your last. Oh wait, you’ll never forget them, or something like that.
THE BOTTOM LINE
What you want to know is that this watch is a workhorse automatic that you can find for just over $100 anytime. It fluctuates anywhere from $60-120. This makes it a perfect entry-level automatic watch. It’s still one of my favorite casual, everyday watches to wear year-round.
