Today’s article features a style challenge where I style 7 outfits for 7 days.
The fall capsule wardrobe or micro capsule closet consists of 7 core items (shirts, pants, jackets, etc…). Since this is my first challenge, exceptions are that undershirts, shoes and accessories do not count.
And so it’s 7 outfits for 7 days, featuring 7 core items. If we include those other pieces it becomes 13 items in total. But for the sake of simplicity, we’re only counting core items.

What is a Fall Capsule Wardrobe?
According to Wiki,
A capsule wardrobe or capsule closet is a term coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe” in the 1970s. [Faux said that] a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.
Naturally, a micro capsule closet is a much leaner version of that.
7 Casual Fall Outfit Ideas for Men
Let’s get started with the style challenge and jump in with 7 casual fall looks that you can copy or gather inspiration from.
Fall Outfit: Day 1
For day one and first look of my fall capsule wardrobe I kept things ultra casual with the classic breton sweatshirt as a base layer. I picked a long sleeve striped shirt as a core item because it keeps things interesting.
The subtle pattern beneath the button down shirt is a cool detail that adds dimension to this overall clean look. Additionally, the contrast of the heather blue ink button down shirt and light wash jeans align with the gum sole sneakers.
Fall Outfit: Day 2
For day two, look two I dialed up the rugged meter by introducing a dark blue waffle knit henley shirt as an undershirt, layered overtop with a grey check flannel. It gives off a casual cool nonchalance, unbuttoned down the front with open cuffs.
Furthermore, notice the front tuck to showcase the vegetable tanned leather belt with golden antique buckle that just pops. Finally, the slim dark wash jeans and dark brown leather boots go together effortlessly.
Fall Outfit: Day 3
Day 3, look 3 of my fall capsule wardrobe introduces the fall staple lambskin leather jacket. It’s one of the top 3 jackets I suggest that all men should have in their wardrobe, it’s that essential. It looks amazing with casual fits like this one. They key is to get one that’s properly fitted to your body shape. Just like a well tailored suit, a leather jacket should fit like a glove.
The dark brown, plain toe leather boots mirror the shade of the leather jacket with the dark blues underneath. I think the darker shades of brown and blue make for such a harmonious color pairing, especially in the fall.
Fall Outfit: Day 4
Fall outfit number 4 sees me reusing every piece that’s been worn in the previous 4 looks. And now it’s time to start getting creative with my mixing and matching.
For this look there’s a bit of contrast going on with the chocolate brown leather jacket and faded, light wash jeans. For some it may be too stark, but a bit of confidence goes a long way. Ensure the fit is on point and it makes everything else easier.
The gray check flannel shirt provides a bit of visual interest up top while the brown boots help to ground the light wash denim.

Fall Outfit: Day 5
Fall outfit number five gets more daring with the 59FIFTY fitted cap. Sometimes I like to wear hats and whenever I’m wearing an outfit that’s decidedly casual, a ball cap can compliment it nicely.
To mix things up further, I’ve paired the light wash jeans with the summer staple breton striped shirt and the fall staple light quilted puffer vest (J.Crew Factory Walker Vest). Sure it may not be for everyone, but for those who like a sporty casual look that can show off a bit of your personality, a getup like this one can work for you.
Fall Outfit: Day 6
Fall fit number 6 is probably my favorite of all 7 outfits in my fall capsule wardrobe. I mentioned what would be my back to school uniform in a recent article, well this ultra simple getup is my early-fall uniform. It’s minimal, stylish and requires little to no thinking, just the way getting dressed should be.
I’m rocking true essentials here—dark wash denim, an oxford cloth button down and my over worn (for good reason) gumsole sneakers. I put on a classic field watch and casual dad hat to finish off the look with small, but significant details.
I’m all uniformed up and feeling ready for the autumn season.
Fall Outfit: Day 7
Speaking of autumn, what better way to prep yourself than to layer up with a stylish solid, grey scarf. I’ve paired it with the breton striped shirt and burgundy vest from earlier. Down low I went dark with dark blue jeans and brown leather boots.
To top things off, I threw on my favorite dad hat with my favorite NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles. I’m just so proud of what the team accomplished last year.
All in all, this is a solid fall fit that rounds out my 7 fall outfits for my 7×7 challenge.
Who is The 7×7 Challenge For?
This challenge is for anyone really, especially guys who want to test their style creativity and further explore their personal style. If you’ve always wanted to experiment with a capsule wardrobe, this challenge is a great (no pressure) introduction.
7×7 Challenge Benefits
The 7 x 7 challenge is perfect for men who want to practice packing light for short trips. In addition to becoming more adept at packing for future travels, you’ll most likely establish a few go-to uniforms for whichever season you’re in. By reinvesting in what you currently own, you’ll save money because you won’t find the need to pick up new clothing all the time.
What to Consider When Building a Capsule Wardrobe
Creating a men’s capsule wardrobe involves selecting a limited number of versatile and essential clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of fits. The goal is to have a functional and minimalist wardrobe that simplifies your daily dressing routine while maintaining a unique sense of style.
Here are key aspects to consider when building your capsule wardrobe:
1. Define Your Style
Start by identifying your personal style, whether it’s classic, casual, formal, minimalist, or anything else. Your style preferences will guide your clothing choices.
2. Assess Your Lifestyle
Consider your daily activities, work dress code, and social life. Your capsule wardrobe should cater to your specific needs, whether you work in a professional office or lead a more relaxed lifestyle.
3. Choose a Color Palette
Select a cohesive color palette that complements your style and skin tone. Neutrals like black, white, gray, and navy are versatile and can be paired with bolder colors if desired.
4. Invest in Quality
Opt for high-quality clothing items that will last longer and withstand regular wear. Quality garments often fit better and can appear more stylish.
5. Essential Clothing Items
Your capsule wardrobe should include essential items like:
- Neutral colored t-shirts (white, black, and gray)
- Oxford button-down shirts (white, light blue, and a striped option)
- Well-fitting jeans and chinos
- A tailored blazer or suit (if needed for your lifestyle)
- Versatile outerwear (e.g., a classic trench coat or a versatile jacket)
- Comfortable and versatile shoes (e.g., sneakers, loafers, and dress shoes)
6. Mix and Match
Choose clothing items that can be easily mixed and matched to create various outfits. For example, a white oxford can be paired with jeans for a casual look or with dress pants for a more formal appearance.
7. Seasonal Considerations
Keep in mind the climate in your area and include season-appropriate clothing. Layering pieces, such as sweaters and lightweight jackets, are essential for transitioning between seasons.
8. Minimal Accessories
Limit accessories to a few key items, like a quality watch, a leather belt, and a versatile tie. Accessories can add a personal touch to your outfits.
9. Regularly Edit and Update
Periodically review your capsule wardrobe and remove items that you no longer wear or need. This helps keep your wardrobe clutter-free and up-to-date.
10. Personalize
Add a few items that reflect your unique style and personality. These could be graphic tees, statement sneakers, or other items that add character to your wardrobe.
11. Sustainability
Consider the environmental impact of your clothing choices. Opt for sustainable and eco-friendly materials when possible.
12. Tailoring
Invest in clean tailoring to ensure that your clothing fits perfectly. Well-fitted clothes make a significant difference in your overall appearance.
Wrapping Up
Ultimately, building a capsule wardrobe is all about quality over quantity and versatility over excess. By following these key aspects, you can create a wardrobe that simplifies your daily clothing decisions and ensures that you always look put-together and stylish.
And there you have it, I completed my 7 x 7 challenge with my first ever fall capsule wardrobe. I hope that you found some value in this editorial.
